How long does it take to become a commercial airline pilot?
Sky asked:
like… right now i’m still in high school.
so after i graduate high school.. i go to an aviation school, right? how much does it cost? and how long do i have to study? 4 years? do i get a degree? like masters or something? and after that what should i do next?
how much does it pay? cause now, it seems like there’s cheap fares so i was wondering if that could affect the pilot’s salary in the future and what are the benefits? dont tell me about “leaving my wife” blah blah blah… not planning to get married anytime soon. lol

graduate from embry riddle. then become a flight instructor. then you can get hired as a commercial pilot. i know a girl who was doing it by the time she was 23: hauling for commercial loads, not passengers. don’t know how long it takes to become a passenger pilot without military experience. that is the other option, join the military and be a pilot there, then you are already trained and can get the commercial pilot jobs. and it’s a lot cheaper than paying for your own training.
embry riddle is the best school. plan to go there.

Embry Riddle is the most overpriced school in the whole country. It has higher average dept than any other school in the world. The ratings you get are exactly the same as any other school, and the hours are worth just as much.
Western Michigan University, U of ND, and Northwestern michigan are some good altenatives.
If you cant afford $250,000, then Northwestern or some lesser school would be your only choices, running about $50,000 for your commercial.
You need some form of bachelors degree to fly any large airliner, but that will take at least several years of flying, and youll have plenty of time to go to school.
No matter where you go, a commercial rating is a commercial rating, but at somewhere like Embry Riddle, you can pay to get hours in aircraft that you would be hired to fly otherwise, so its just a way for rich people to cheat the system.
Anybody who cant afford that would need to get a job to get hours, and after getting about 500, you start to be eligible for some good jobs. Many airlines will hire you as a reserve pilot as long as you have passed your airline transport pilot written on top of 500 hours, but over 1000 is recommended.
The lowest you start for is about $15hr, and you are limited to 1000hrs a year, so you do the math.
The pay goes up considerably with time, your first year makes a huge difference.

How long?
That depends on YOU and how long you take to progress through your commercial, multi-engine and instrument rating, build flight experience and then get a job with a regional airline.
Aviation school?
An aviation degree is not necessary but to get hired later on with a major, you will need a bachelors degree in any subject. You can probably get hired at a regional with only an associates.
Pilot Pay?
Try $18K to start. Pay is not what it used to be! It may take a few years to see $30K depending on the airline you go to work for. Regional captain is about $50K and major airline pay at at least that with some seniority. However jumping from a regional to a major, you will initially take a pay cut- AA & United start at about $28K/yr.
